Up Close & Personal

Verse of Reflection:  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8a (NASB)

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like up-close photos! I have two reasons for not liking them: 1) I feel like the photographer is in my personal space and 2) I don’t want the photographer capturing all of the flaws on my face. When a photographer begins to move closer to my face I want to say, “Back up, you are too close!” When I think about it, there are times when you and I tell God the same thing, “Backup, you are too close.”

We tend to want to keep God at “arms length.” By that I mean, we want Him to be available when we need something. We don’t want Him getting too close so He can transform our lives. We only want Him near in our time of need, otherwise “we are  good.” However, that is not the type of relationship God wants to have with us. He wants you and me to have all that He has stored up for us! But, the only way we can receive what He has in store for us is we must draw near to Him. He wants to come up close and get personal. He wants to transform our lives from the inside out.

When God comes near, He has a purpose. He wants you to know the reason for your existence and live it out each day. He is concerned about every aspect of our lives, not just the areas that we want Him to be involved in when we need Him. God is not intrusive, He will not barge into our lives; He will only come near if we draw near to Him first, as James 4:8a tells us.

Take the story of Zaccheus, “Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly.”
Luke 19:3-6 NASB

Zaccheus came close enough to Jesus because he wanted to see Him. But Jesus wanted to draw closer to him, so Jesus invites himself to Zaccheus’ home. Jesus wants to do the same with you and me. He wants to get up close and personal.

When I decided to draw near to God, as He promised, He drew near to me. In His own loving, kind, gentle way, He points out the flaws in my life. You know the flaws we all try to cover up, but they are still there. Jesus accepts us the way we are, flaws and all, but He doesn’t want to leave us that way. As I surrender to Him, He walks with me through the transformation process. Life’s a journey, and I need Him every step of the way. I’m blessed because He has drawn near to me and we are up close and personal.

My Prayer for Today
Lord, may I draw near to you each day and allow you to come it and transform my life from the inside out. I know you have a special plan and purpose for me, and the only way I can learn more about your purpose and plans for my life is to get up close and personal with you. Amen
